Early Life

Hannibal Buress was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 4, 1983. Margaret, his mother, was a teacher, and John, his father, worked for the Union Pacific Railroad.

Buress grew up in Chicago’s Austin area with an elder sister. After graduating from Steinmetz College Prep, he enrolled at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he met his RA, hip-hop musician, and comic Open Mike Eagle.

He was named after Carthaginian General Hannibal Barca, and he has claimed in his stand-up act that women have turned him down because his name reminds them of Hannibal Lecter.

He is also an Emmy-nominated writer, a hip-hop video director, and, owing to Grand Theft Auto V, a video game voice actor. He is based in New York City, made his debut on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson in 2007, and two years later he was on his way to an Emmy nomination thanks to a two-year stint writing for Saturday Night Live.

In 2010, he released his first comedy album, My Name Is Hannibal, on the Stand-Up! label, the same year he joined the writing team of 30 Rock, but he only remained for six months, afraid that his work would transition to long-form television when he preferred sketches and standup.

With work on The Eric Andre Show, he returned to the former, while the latter meant returning to the road with his act and releasing the 2012 television comedy special Animal Furnace, as well as the CD Animal Furnace, both on Comedy Central. He directed the video for Chance the Rapper’s “NaNa” in 2013, and then returned to Comedy Central in 2014 for the album and television special Live from Chicago.
